France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after edging Paraguay 1-0 in a fiercely contested Round of 16 encounter on Saturday, with Kylian Mbappé’s second-half penalty proving decisive in sweltering conditions in Philadelphia

The victory ensures Les Bleus remain on course for another deep run at the tournament and sets up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against Morocco

Playing under intense heat, with temperatures climbing to 39°C, France dominated possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Paraguay side that lined up with a defensive 5-4-1 formation and frustrated the European giants for much of the contest

France were forced into a late change before kick-off after midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni withdrew with a muscle injury

Manu Koné stepped into the starting lineup alongside Adrien Rabiot, while Paraguay remained committed to a compact defensive approach aimed at limiting France’s attacking threat

The opening half offered few clear opportunities as Paraguay’s disciplined defensive display restricted France to speculative efforts

Rabiot, Koné and Ousmane Dembélé all tried from distance without success, while Julio Enciso provided Paraguay’s only real attacking spark. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested before the interval

France emerged after the break with greater urgency, increasing the pressure on Paraguay’s defence

Their breakthrough finally arrived in the 70th minute when substitute Désiré Doué, introduced for Bradley Barcola, was brought down inside the penalty area by Diego Gómez

Following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the referee pointed to the penalty spot, and Mbappé calmly converted, sending goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way for his seventh goal of the tournament

The strike also marked Mbappé’s 19th FIFA World Cup goal in just 19 appearances, underlining his remarkable scoring record on football’s biggest stage

Paraguay refused to surrender and pushed forward in the closing stages

France goalkeeper Mike Maignan was finally called into action in the 90th minute, producing his first save of the match to preserve his side’s slender advantage

Mbappé had opportunities to extend France’s lead during stoppage time, but Gill produced two excellent saves to keep Paraguay alive

Despite the late pressure, France remained composed enough to see out the victory and secure their place in the last eight

The result also denied Paraguay revenge for their heartbreaking 1998 World Cup Round of 16 defeat to France, when the eventual champions progressed thanks to Laurent Blanc’s famous golden goal

France will now turn their attention to a highly anticipated quarter-final showdown against Morocco as they continue their quest for another FIFA World Cup title
