Customs authorities of Nigeria, Benin, and Cameroon recently joined forces to strengthen border cooperation, speed up trade, and boost <a href="https://absafricatv9491.live-website.com/expert-says-space-technology-can-help-africa-tackle-food-security-climate-risks-and-economic-growth/” title=”Expert says space technology can help Africa tackle food security, climate risks and economic growth”>economic growth across West and Central Africa.

Three African countries partner to boost cross border trade, beyond just security

    • Customs authorities from Nigeria, Benin, and Cameroon agreed to strengthen border cooperation and boost Interborder trade.
    • Their partnership follows a fact-finding mission to the advanced Beitbridge Border Post between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
    • The initiative, supported by the African Export-Import Bank, focuses on modernizing border operations.
    • Key reforms will include improved administration, interconnected IT systems, joint risk management, and enhanced staff training.

This partnership came after top officials completed a fact-finding mission to the Beitbridge Border Post between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

This visit was sponsored by the African Export-Import Bank under the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement.

Customs chiefs from Nigeria, Cameroon, and Benin are joining forces to overhaul border operations along two vital trade highways.

Led by Nigeria’s Adewale Adeniyi, Cameroon’s Fongod Edwin Nuvaga, and Benin’s Raouf Aboudou, the joint initiative targets key reforms along the Seme-Krake corridor connecting Nigeria to Benin and the Mfum-Ekok corridor linking Nigeria to Cameroon.

To make trade move faster and easier, the three delegations studied how modern border posts manage traffic, operate cargo scanners, and connect digital information networks.

Emphasizing the broader goals of this transformation, Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi stated in a report by Punch Newspapers that:

“Beitbridge has demonstrated that border modernization is not merely about infrastructure development”

Adewale also added that “the most important lesson for us is that sustainable reform depends on coordinated institutions, clear accountability, digital interoperability, and professional human capital.”

Punch reported that the three nations wrapped up their joint trip by signing a formal agreement that creates a Joint Strategic Steering Committee. This team will guide and track the rollout of the new border upgrades.
