Summer is the perfect time to get out of the city and enjoy life on a farm. But not all farms are created equal. The farms on this list go beyond just looking around.

Here, kids and adults can feed animals, harvest vegetables, ride horses, taste honey, cut lavender, and more. These farms promise hands-on fun for the whole family.

    Oakhurst Farm Cottages

Oakhurst Farm Cottages is a working dairy farm transformed into a family-friendly getaway. Children and adults can milk cows, collect eggs, ride ponies or horses, and explore the farm trails. Toddlers have plenty of safe, supervised activities like pony rides and animal feeding.

Rustic cottages provide a comfortable place to stay while families enjoy the open fields and fresh air. Cycling, nature walks, and simple farm chores let everyone experience real farm life. Oakhurst is ideal for families wanting a hands-on adventure without sacrificing comfort.

    Boschendal Wine Estate

Boschendal is more than just vineyards. Its family-oriented programs include treehouse accommodations where kids can interact with animals, harvest seasonal produce, and participate in foraging or vegetable-gathering activities. Parents can relax with wine tastings or farm-to-table dining while kids explore safely.

The estate combines comfort with rural adventure. Cottages and family accommodations are perfect for spending a few days immersed in nature and farm activities. Boschendal gives families the chance to enjoy farm life alongside fine wine and beautiful landscapes.

    Glen Oakes Farm

Located near Caledon in the Overberg region, Glen Oakes Farm offers cosy cottages and open spaces among fynbos fields. Children can meet pigs, cows, and chickens, giving them hands-on experience with farm animals. Adults can enjoy the calm and scenery while participating in farm activities.

This farm is ideal for families looking for a slower pace and opportunities to disconnect from city life. Open lawns and trails allow for playful exploration, while guided animal interactions give kids a safe but authentic taste of farm life.

    Travalia Guest Farm

Travalia Guest Farm is conveniently located on the N1 at Three Sisters, near Beaufort West, Victoria West, Murraysburg, and Richmond. The farm offers clean, comfortable overnight accommodation with warm showers or baths, and some rooms are wheelchair friendly. Pets are welcome, and bookings are easy thanks to excellent service and a peaceful farm atmosphere.

Families can enjoy green lawns, lovely gardens, a playground for energetic children, and a swimming pool to relax in after a day of exploring.

Travalia is home to sheep, cattle, and game, including kudu, springbok, and other smaller antelope. The Herholdt family started the farm in 1989 and still runs it today, offering a welcoming and authentic farm experience for all ages.

    De Denne Country Guest House

De Denne Country Guest House sits on a working ostrich and alfalfa farm near Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. Its suites range from cosy family rooms to larger self-catering cottages, many offering views over gardens, farmland, and mountains.

Guests can take a guided ostrich-farm tour, see ostriches up close, and, when in season, watch chicks hatch. The property also has two swimming pools, wide lawns, and gardens, creating a relaxing and safe environment for children.

The on-site restaurant offers breakfasts, BBQ dinners, and light meals, while self-catering cottages have fully equipped kitchens and braai facilities. De Denne blends comfortable accommodation with genuine farm-life activities, making it perfect for families seeking hands-on summer experiences.

Why these farms work for families

All of these farms provide a balance of comfort and activity. Children can feed animals, milk cows, harvest produce, ride horses or ponies, or participate in simple farm tasks. Adults can join in the fun or relax in scenic surroundings. This mix ensures that everyone in the family leaves with happy memories.

Whether you want the realism of a working farm or a more relaxed farm-holiday experience, these destinations give families the opportunity to experience farm life fully. From harvesting vegetables to cutting lavender, each farm offers unique hands-on experiences for both children and adults.

Summer farm visits do not have to be passive. These farms make it easy to learn, play, and enjoy time together in nature. They are perfect for weekend trips or longer summer holidays, creating opportunities for connection, adventure, and discovery.
