Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, told Parliament’s portfolio committees on international relations and justice that more countries are expected to support South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Several nations, including Brazil, Spain, Turkey, and the Republic of Ireland, have already filed requests to intervene in the case. Lamola confirmed that the government has actively engaged other states to rally support for the Palestinian cause.

Lamola explained that South Africa’s efforts go beyond legal action. “Even at the AU level, South Africa continues to mobilise member states of the African Union to support this cause,” he said.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has intensified diplomatic engagement, ensuring that the issue is raised not only in international courts but also within key multilateral bodies.

The minister highlighted a shift in stance from some Western nations, noting their growing support for the case.
“We are also welcoming the fact that there are also other countries, even in the West, which are beginning to now see this through the eyes of South Africa, and they have done so in the last engagement of the recognition of a Palestinian state,” Lamola said.
Brazil recently confirmed its intention to support South Africa’s case, alongside 14 other countries.
