Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has taken aim at Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption, labelling it “toothless” for not compelling KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to testify.
Malema insisted that Mkhwanazi must appear before the parliamentary hearings even though he is also scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which begins on 17 September 2025.

Debate Over Witness Priorities
On Wednesday, the committee received another progress report ahead of its hearings, which are expected to start with Mkhwanazi’s testimony at the end of September. Discussions centred largely around his role as the first witness.
While parties agreed to have him appear, concerns were raised that his commitment to the Madlanga Commission might take precedence.
Malema, however, rejected this possibility and urged the committee to issue a subpoena. “Even if it means stopping halfway to go and appear before the [Madlanga] Commission and come back, that’s fine. But he must come to us. Without Mkhwanazi, we are toothless, we are useless,” he said.

Evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse confirmed that all witnesses on the list had responded positively. However, he cautioned that the committee might only be able to begin hearings in October, later than initially expected.
