The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has strongly criticised Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, accusing him of undermining his position by “treating it like his kingdom.”

According to the MK Party, McKenzie’s decisions have harmed the growth of sports and culture, while also showing “utter disrespect” to young South Africans striving to overcome poverty through their talents.

“What McKenzie has done is sabotage. Sabotage of grassroots development, sabotage of constitutional obligations and sabotage of the dreams of ordinary South Africans.

“His actions do not uplift the poor, they abandon them. They are not reform, they are vandalism,” the party declared.

Allegations of Misused Funds and Ongoing Investigations

The MK Party’s criticism follows growing concerns about the alleged misuse of public funds within the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC). Recent reports revealed that National Federations have received notices of funding cuts from the department.

McKenzie is currently under investigation by the Public Protector after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) lodged a complaint over his R800,000 trip to the Paris Olympics.

On 16 October 2024, the EFF also referred the matter to the Ethics Committee, accusing the minister of misleading the public about the actual costs before eventually admitting to misusing taxpayer funds.

MK Party Targets Government of National Unity

The MK Party further accused McKenzie of acting with “impunity,” alleging that he is shielded by the Government of National Unity (GNU).

“This so-called GNU has made a sport out of protecting incompetence, defending ministers who fail and insulating the elites from accountability,” the party said.

They went on to describe the GNU as a “cartel of mediocrity” that is allowing destructive practices to damage South Africa’s sports and culture sectors.

The MK Party has since called for a parliamentary probe into McKenzie’s actions through the Joint Committee and Members’ Interests. They also demanded that the president publicly address what they describe as the GNU’s protection of incompetence.
