Justin Snaith-trained Note To Self, ridden by Richard Fourie, won the 130th running of the Hollywoodbets Durban July at Hollywoodbets Greyville in Durban on Saturday, edging Wish List into second place as King Pelles finished third

The victory gave Snaith another major success in South African racing’s most prominent event and handed Fourie the win in a race-day carrying a record R10 million stake

Billed as Africa’s richest horse race, the Durban July again drew large crowds, celebrities, political figures, fashion personalities and racing enthusiasts to Greyville for a day that combined elite racing with high-profile social and fashion events

This year’s theme, “Country Allure”, brought cowboy-inspired and rural-elegance looks to the racecourse, with guests interpreting the theme through country fashion, equestrian styling and formal race-day wear

Billed as Africa’s richest horse race, the Durban July again drew large crowds, celebrities, political figures, fashion personalities and racing enthusiasts.

Notable figures in attendance included EFF leader Julius Malema and his wife, Mantwa Matlala; radio personality and actor Thando Thabethe; and Miss South Africa 2025, Qhawekazi Mazaleni, among other prominent figures and personalities

Sometimes wild and whacky, occasionally bizarre, but (almost) always beautiful — that is the Hollywoodbets Durban July fashion experience.

KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development MEC Reverend Musa Zondi said the event was expected to give the provincial economy a significant boost, with more than R245 million projected to flow through tourism, hospitality, transport, fashion, entertainment and small business activity linked to the race

Zondi said the benefits of the event were being felt beyond Greyville, with related activities taking place in townships and surrounding communities as part of efforts to broaden participation in the Durban July economy

The vibrant spirit of South African style was on full display.

“So, back to economics. It’s jobs, jobs, jobs. It’s sustaining our jobs, it’s sustaining the industry of what is going on in KwaZulu-Natal,” Zondi said

He said the event also carried social value for the province

“On top of it all, we speak a lot as government of social cohesion — there is nothing that surpasses what we see here,” he said

Racegoers embraced this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July’s Country Allure theme on Saturday in the Raceday Fashion Awards presented by Durban Fashion Fair.
