The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded President William Ruto with the CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award 2025 after his aggressive push to construct a new stadium and upgrade the Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums.

The award was presented to President Ruto by the Football Kenya Federation President, Hussein Mohammed, on July 14 at State House, Nairobi, while presiding over the handing of flags to Harambee Starlets Under 17 and Harambee Starlets.

The two teams are headed to the Women’s World Cup Under-17 and the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The award was given by CAF President Patrice Motsepe to President Ruto for outstanding preparation for the 2027 AFCON tournament with regard to improving infrastructure, such as the stadiums, and various logistics that will support the tournament.

The award, according to the State House, was initially presented to President Ruto at an event in Rabat, Morocco, last November in his absence, but was presented to him physically today.

President Ruto joins seven other African leaders honored with the award, alongside Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who were recognized at the 2025 CAF Awards for hosting the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship set for next year.

They follow Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who was awarded in 2022; Cameroon’s Paul Biya, 2023; and Egypt’s Abdel Fattah El-Sisi (2023) Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, who received the award in 2022 as recipients, bringing the total to seven Presidents honored.

In the grand scheme of things, the award recognizes Heads of State and prominent leaders who make exceptional contributions to the growth and development of football in Africa.

It honours visionary leaders who elevate African football globally through heavy investment in sports infrastructure, strengthening of football institutions, and successful hosting of major continental tournaments.

For Kenya, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, led by Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, has led efforts to see the AFCON 2027 come to fruition, with preparations spanning beyond stadiums.

The government is prioritizing transport networks, medical facilities, and security protocols for the 2027 AFCON,with plans including multi-billion shilling access roads to Talanta Sports City, upgraded highways, enhanced hospital capacity at facilities like Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Uasin Gishu, and dedicated training complexes near venues.

The 820-meter Ngong Road-Naivasha Road Flyover elevated dual carriageway near the Junction Mall near Talanta Sports City Stadium commissioned on June 29, 2026 by President Ruto, is one of the infrastructure works that will support easy movement of people during the tournament, with plans in place to also set up the new Nyayo Stadium rail station, which will connect the Nairobi CBD, Nyayo Stadium, and the upcoming Talanta Stadium.

There are also plans for a proposed single-entry visa allowing fans four months of unconditional movement across the three hosting nations, with extended plans for streamlining customs clearance, introducing tax exemptions for tournament goods, and boosting connectivity to support broadcasting and logistics during the one-month tournament.
