The search for a new Tunisia national team head coach could be finalized in the coming days, with Moïne Chaâbani emerging as the frontrunner. Following a very disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, Tunisia are ultimately set to turn to a local coach.
The World Cup was one to forget for the Carthage Eagles, who conceded three or more goals in each of their three group-stage matches and exited the tournament without a single point.
Head coach Hervé Renard left his post after the early elimination, while the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports are now targeting Chaâbani as the next national team head coach. The 44-year-old Tunisian is still under contract with Moroccan club RS Berkane.

According to La Presse, Chaâbani is the clear favorite, with the FTF prepared to pay the compensation demanded by Berkane. Chaâbani is reportedly planning for the club’s preseason and the 2026/27 Botola Pro campaign with Berkane, but he could be tempted by Tunisia’s offer. Chaâbani previously turned down the Tunisia job due to his contractual obligations, but this time the situation could be different.
The former Tunisia international has a proven track record of success at club level. He guided Espérance Tunis to two CAF Champions League titles and three Tunisian league championships. He further enhanced his reputation by leading RS Berkane to their maiden Moroccan league title in the 2024/25 season. In addition to the league triumph, Berkane also won the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup.
Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Faouzi Lekjaa, who also serves as the honorary president of RS Berkane, has reportedly stepped in to facilitate Chaâbani’s departure from the club. Berkane are expected to receive USD $100,000 in compensation from the FTF to release Chaâbani from his contract.
