Sun Pharma has secured approval from South Africa‘s SAHPRA to manufacture and market a generic semaglutide injection, making South Africa the second market after India to grant such approval. The product will be launched as a pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen in two strengths — 2 mg/1.5 mL and 4 mg/3 mL — with once-weekly dosing for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes.

Sun Pharmaceutical received approval from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to manufacture and market a generic version of semaglutide injection in South Africa. The approval covers the treatment of adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise. The company plans to launch the product in the coming days, aiming to address the growing burden of diabetes in the region driven by urbanization and lifestyle changes.

South Africa is the second market after India where Sun Pharma has received approval for generic semaglutide, reflecting the company’s ability to develop complex generic medicines that meet stringent quality standards across different markets. The submission to the exchanges was made under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.

    Product Details

The approved generic semaglutide will be available as a ready-to-use, pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen with once-weekly dosing. The following table outlines the key specifications:

    Specification: Details
Dosage Form: Pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen
    Strength 1: 2 mg / 1.5 mL
    Strength 2: 4 mg / 3 mL
    Dosing Frequency: Once weekly
Indication: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (adults)

    Management Commentary

Aalok Shanghvi, Chief Operating Officer of Sun Pharma, emphasized the significance of this approval, stating that the company remains committed to improving access to generics and making evidence-based treatment options available to patients and healthcare professionals.

What are the expected pricing dynamics for Sun Pharma’s generic semaglutide compared to the branded version in South Africa?

Will Sun Pharma pursue regulatory approvals for this generic semaglutide in other key markets beyond India and South Africa?

How might this launch impact Sun Pharma’s market share in the diabetes treatment segment within South Africa?
