South Africa beat Pakistan to take 1-0 lead in Women’s U19 T20 series

Aqsa Habib fought back bravely after Pakistan lost three wickets without scoring any runs

KARACHI: South Africa defeated Pakistan by four wickets in the opening match of the five-match Women’s U19 T20 series at the National Bank Stadium on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead.

Batting first, Pakistan suffered a disastrous start as openers Ravali Farhan and Komal Khan, along with Raahima Syed, were all dismissed without scoring, leaving the hosts reeling at 0-3.

The Girls in Green recovered through Zoofishan Ayyaz and Aqsa Habib, who steadied the innings with a crucial 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Aqsa top-scored with a patient 38 from 50 deliveries, striking six boundaries before her dismissal. Zoofishan contributed 30 off 40 balls, including four fours, while captain Fizza Fiaz made 14 from 21 deliveries with two boundaries.

Shahar Bano provided late impetus with an unbeaten 18 off just seven balls, smashing two fours and a six, as Pakistan posted 103-6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Ashleigh Van Wyk starred with the ball for South Africa, returning impressive figures of 3/15 from four overs. Miya Lalor claimed two wickets, while Melissa Van der Merwe chipped in with one.

In reply, South Africa comfortably chased down the 104-run target in 16 overs despite losing six wickets. Opener Chanel Venter anchored the chase with a match-winning 41 off 32 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes.

Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout added 22 from 20 balls with four boundaries, while Miya Lalor contributed a brisk 14 off 11 deliveries.

For Pakistan, Maham Nazakat and Shahar Bano claimed two wickets apiece, but their efforts were not enough to prevent South Africa from securing victory.
