South Africa’s tourism sector continued its recovery in June, with the country welcoming more than 823,000 overnight tourists, an increase of 9.8 per cent compared with the same month last year.
According to Statistics South Africa, overall, more than 2.7 million travellers passed through the country’s ports of entry during the month, with foreign travellers accounting for nearly three-quarters of all movements.
The biggest share of tourists came from neighbouring SADC countries, making up more than 81 per cent of all international visitors.

Overseas visitors accounted for just over 17 percent, led by the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
97.3 percent of tourists visited the country for holiday purposes, including visiting family and friends, shopping and vacations, while business travel accounted for just 2.4 percent.
Most visitors entered South Africa by road, highlighting the continued importance of regional tourism to the country’s visitor economy.
The figures show South Africa’s tourism recovery remains driven largely by strong regional travel, while overseas arrivals continue to provide steady support for the sector.
