Kenyan wildlife authorities are investigating whether a toxic substance killed 15 elephants in the country’s famed Amboseli ecosystem, raising fresh concerns over the health of one of Africa’s most important wildlife habitats and a major tourism destination.

    • Kenya is investigating the deaths of 15 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem after preliminary tests detected a potential toxic substance.
    • Most of the affected animals, mainly females and calves, developed paralysis before dying within two days.
    • Authorities are analysing water sources and other environmental factors to identify the cause of the deaths.
    • Wildlife officials say there is no evidence the incident poses a risk to humans.

The deaths occurred between 24 June and 24 July across Amboseli National Park, Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Ranch, a vast conservation landscape near the Tanzanian border that is renowned for its large elephant population and iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), 10 elephants displayed similar symptoms before dying, including partial paralysis that left them unable to stand. Most died within one or two days.

The outbreak primarily affected adult females and calves, with only one adult male among the confirmed deaths. Five other carcasses were too badly decomposed or had been scavenged, preventing officials from determining how those animals died.

Amboseli, one of Africa’s best-known elephant habitats, is at the centre of an investigation into the unexplained deaths of 15 elephants.BI Africa

Preliminary tests point to possible toxin

Initial laboratory analysis by the University of Nairobi detected what officials described as a potential toxic substance in samples taken from several elephants.

However, government laboratory tests have so far ruled out the specific toxins examined, prompting investigators to widen their search.

Authorities are now analysing water whether the elephants were exposed to a common source

Despite the ongoing investigation, KWS said there is currently no evidence that the incident poses a risk to human health.

The agency said the condition appears confined to the affected elephants, with no indication it can be transmitted to people.

The Amboseli ecosystem is one of Africa’s best-known wildlife landscapes, supporting more than 2,000 elephants and underpinning Kenya’s multi-billion-shilling tourism industry.

It is also home to some of the continent’s last remaining “super tuskers”, elephants with exceptionally large tusks that reach the ground.

The unexplained deaths come just weeks after the natural death of One Ton, one of Kenya’s iconic super tuskers, highlighting renewed attention on elephant conservation in the region.

While elephant deaths in East Africa have previously been linked to poisoning, drought and disease, officials have stressed that it is too early to determine what caused the latest incident.

Investigators say further laboratory testing will be needed before confirming whether a toxin, environmental contamination or another factor is responsible.
