Catholic Sisters serving in the legal profession across Africa have been told that sound knowledge of canon and civil law is key to their prophetic witness and responsible stewardship in the Church.
Addressing participants at the opening of theJuly 30-31 Conferenceorganized bytheCatholic Sisters in Legal Profession(CASILEP), the organization’s Director, Sr.Eutropia Chao Mwakamba, said the gathering’s theme, “Prophetic Witness of Catholic Sisters in Canon and Civil Matters: Learning, Connecting and Building a Community of Practice for the Common Good,” reflects the growing importance of legal competence in Religious Life.
“The theme invites us to reflect deeply on the evolving profession of Catholic Sisters in legal matters,” Sr. Chao said on Thursday, July 30.
She explained that the theme “recognizes that prophetic witness today demands sound knowledge of both canon law, which governs the life and mission of the Church, and civil law, which shapes the societies in which our ministries serve.”
The Kenyn member of theMissionary Sisters of the Precious Blood(CPS)said Catholic Sisters exercise prophetic witness through ministries that defend human rights, promote justice, accompany vulnerable people, foster peace and reconciliation, and care for creation.
