2027 ODI World Cup: South Africa gets eight venues as ICC unveils host list

The ICC confirmed on Thursday that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be held at 12 locations in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with eight of the grounds located in the rainbow nation.

After 24 years, the prestigious 50-over tournament is back in Africa. The eighth Men’s Cricket World Cup was held in 2003 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.

Eight South <a href="https://absafricatv.com/african-nations-step-up-push-for-circular-economy-investment/” title=”African nations step up push for circular economy investment”>African cities, three Zimbabwean cities, and Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, were announced as co-hosts for the competition during a grand ceremony in Johannesburg.

Along with Zimbabwe’s Hamilton Masakadza and Namibia’s Rudolf Jansen van Vuuren, South African cricket legends Graeme Smith, Makhaya Ntini, Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, and Kagiso Rabada were also present to commemorate the historic occasion.

Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Centurion in Tshwane, Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban, St George’s Park in Gqeberha, Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Boland Park in Paarl, and Buffalo Park in KuGompo City (formerly East London) are the eight venues in South Africa.

Harare Sports Club (Harare), Queens Sports Club (Bulawayo), and the recently built Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium (Victoria Falls) are the three locations around Zimbabwe.

The Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek will host the games in Namibia.

“The return of this prestigious tournament to Africa after 24 years is a landmark moment for cricket. We are confident that South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will deliver an unforgettable event, showcasing the warmth, passion and rich diversity that make this region truly unique,” ICC chairman Jay Shah was quoted as saying in a press release.

With a new three-stage format that will provide more competitive cricket and improve the fan experience, the 57 matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 will have more context, competitiveness, and consequence.

The three teams ranked 12 to 14 will compete in a round-robin format in a Super Series, with the winning team advancing to the next round. 12 teams will compete in a round-robin format over the course of a 30-match tournament, split into two groups of six.

There will be 21 round-robin games in the Super 7, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the top Super Seven team will face the fourth-place team, while the second-place team will play the third-place team.
