South Africa strengthened its recovery in the first half of 2026, welcoming 5.58 million international visitors as rising demand from across the continent helped sustain one of the industry’s strongest growth rates since the pandemic.

South Africa welcomed 5.58 million international visitors in the first half of 2026, driven by strong regional demand.

    • South Africa welcomed 5.58 million international visitors in the first half of 2026, marking a 12.3% increase from a year earlier as tourism recovery gathered pace.
    • The growth was driven largely by African travellers, whose arrivals rose 14.3%, while overseas visitors increased 5.6%, highlighting the strength of regional travel.
    • The rebound reinforces tourism’s role as a key driver of jobs, aviation, hospitality, retail and foreign exchange earnings in Africa’s most developed tourism market.
    • Officials say improved air connectivity, stronger regional partnerships and expanded marketing efforts are expected to sustain the sector’s growth momentum.

Official figures released by South Africa’s Department of Tourism show the country received 5,584,473 international tourists between January and June, a 12.3% increase from the same period last year.

Growth was led by African markets, where arrivals climbed 14.3%, while overseas arrivals increased 5.6%, highlighting the growing importance of regional travel to the country’s visitor economy.

The latest figures reinforce South Africa’s position as Africa’s most developed tourism market, with the sector remaining a major contributor to employment, a

African travellers are driving the recovery

One of the clearest trends in the latest data is the growing role of intra-African travel.

While visitors from traditional long-haul markets continued to rise, travellers from across the African continent accounted for the fastest growth, reflecting stronger regional business travel, leisure tourism and cross-border movement.

The United States remained South Africa’s largest overseas American visitors, underscoring the country’s continued appeal beyond Africa

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille attributed the performance to efforts to diversify South Africa’s tourism offering, strengthen partnerships with industry stakeholders and expand marketing initiatives across Africa and other strategic international markets.

Government also plans to improve air connectivity and ease of travel to sustain momentum.

The rebound is significant because tourism remains one of South Africa’s most important service industries.

Beyond hotels and tour operators, higher visitor numbers support airlines, airports, restaurants, transport providers, retailers and thousands of small businesses that depend on tourism spending.

For investors, sustained growth in international arrivals provides a positive signal for listed hospitality companies, airlines, airport operators and property owners with exposure to the tourism sector.

The figures also suggest that South Africa’s tourism recovery is entering a more durable phase. After surpassing pre-pandemic visitor levels in 2025, the latest double-digit growth indicates the sector is no longer simply rebounding, it is expanding, supported by stronger regional demand and improving overseas arrivals.

    Air connectivity and regional integration

The latest performance also highlights the increasing importance of air connectivity and regional integration in Africa’s tourism industry.

As African airlines expand routes and governments continue efforts to improve travel links and reduce barriers to movement, regional tourism is expected to play an even greater role in supporting economic growth across the continent.

For South Africa, maintaining this momentum will depend on continued investment in tourism infrastructure, simplified visa processes, stronger marketing and improved connectivity with both African and overseas markets.
