New public charge rules take effect

New public charge rules took effect Sept. 18, giving immigration officers broader discretion to consider certain green card applicants’ use of means-tested public benefits. Programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, CHIP, and housing assistance may now be considered, although using a benefit does not automatically mean an application will be denied. Boundless has put together a new FAQ explaining what changed, who is affected, how the rules apply to family members and sponsors, and what green card applicants should know before filing.

States and cities sue to block new public charge rule

Meanwhile, a coalition of states, cities, and counties has sued the Trump administration over the new public charge policy. The lawsuits argue that the rule exceeds DHS’s authority and gives immigration officers too much discretion when determining whether someone is likely to become a public charge. The legal challenges did not prevent the policy from taking effect Sept. 18, meaning the new rules remain in place while the cases move forward.

Judge blocks rule ending “duration of status”

A federal judge has blocked a DHS rule that would have ended the longstanding “duration of status” system for F-1 students, J-1 exchange visitors, and I visa holders. The rule was set to take effect Sept. 15 and would have imposed fixed admission periods, including a four-year maximum for most students and exchange visitors. The preliminary injunction means the existing system — including the 60-day post-completion grace period for F-1 students — remains in place while the legal challenge continues.

U.S. visa services vary widely by country

U.S. embassies and consulates are processing visas worldwide, but appointment availability, wait times, and services still vary significantly by location. Boundless’ updated country-by-country tracker covers current visa services and processing changes, including countries where applicants are being redirected to regional posts. It also explains the visa issuance restrictions that took effect Jan. 1, 2026, affecting <a href="https://absafricatv.com/mauritius-to-launch-national-crime-agency/” title=”Mauritius to launch National Crime Agency”>nationals of 39 countries under Presidential Proclamation 10998.

U.S. announces new visa restrictions targeting some South Africans

The State Department announced new visa restrictions targeting certain South African nationals over the country’s land and race-related policies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the restrictions may apply to people the U.S. determines are responsible for policies enabling uncompensated land seizures, racial discrimination, or incitement of violence against minority groups. No individuals were named. South Africa rejected the U.S. characterization of its policies, saying they are intended to address inequalities stemming from apartheid.
