…commends  contributions to economic  advancement,  community development

Nigerians in the diaspora and across  Europe converged on  Saturday, August 1, 2026, to celebrate the annual Nollywood Film Festival— Germany and Nollywood Golden Awards organized by Ehizoya Golden Entertainment,  but somewhere between the red carpet, the applause and the awards, a more enduring Nigerian story was quietly unfolding the story of a man whose journey from entreprenurship to philanthropy is beginning to attract recognition far beyond home.

That rare gem  is High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele (Okwunze Aguata)— Chairman of Mekens Integrated Nigeria Ltd., who was honoured with the Uncommon Philanthropist Award at the Nollywood Europe Golden Awards during the film festival.

The award did not come in isolation. It arrived at the end of a remarkable run of recognitions that has placed Obele increasingly at the intersection of business, community development and social responsibility. Just weeks earlier, on July 18, Obele was named Business Icon of the Year at the fifth edition of the Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards in Awka, in recognition of his contributions to enterprise and community development.

Then came another significant honour from the Nigerian Diaspora in Europe, where the Anambra State Association Europe (ASA Europe) recognised him as an Honorary Patron, citing his contributions to entrepreneurship, philanthropy, human capital development and community service.

At the Frankfurt watershed event, the significance of the evening was amplified by the calibre of personalities who gathered at Saray Turkuaz Hall. Among them were Amb.  Senator Ita Enang, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany; Wahab Akande, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Switzerland; and Dr. Yakubu Audu Dadu, Consul General of Nigeria in Frankfurt.

The gathering also attracted Hon. Osifo Omorede, Special Adviser on Women Mobilization and former Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism; Iryn Omorogiuwa, Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy; Dr. Moses Kolade Ogun, President of NIDO-Germany; Dr. Balogun, Vice President of the Nigerian Medical Association; former Super Eagles Assistant Head Coach Benjamin James; Netherlands-based entertainer Skimmy Yah; Belgium-based recording artist Dede Kay; Manchester-based philanthropist Kate Onomeregwa; as well as delegations from the United Kingdom, Finland and Ireland.

The evening further brought together notable names from Nigeria’s entertainment and creative industry, including veteran actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu, actor and entrepreneur Nosa Rex Okunzuwa, Rosabelle Jeanne Andrews Iyafokhai, Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy Hon. Christopher Okaeben, and renowned entertainment journalist Stella Dimoko Korkus.

The significance of the evening, however, went beyond the glamour of Nollywood and the presentation of awards. The convergence of diplomats, policymakers, creative industry figures, entrepreneurs, community leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora gave the occasion a wider meaning, bringing together different expressions of Nigerian influence on an international platform.

Against that backdrop, Super High Chief Dr.  Anthony Ikenna Obele’s recognition as an Uncommon Philanthropist carried a significance beyond the ceremony itself. It placed his story within a larger narrative about the contribution of Nigerian entrepreneurs and philanthropists to community development, cultural diplomacy and the projection of Nigeria’s image abroad.

Chief Obele’s entrepreneurial journey is anchored by Mekens Integrated Nigeria Ltd., with interests spanning construction, real estate, hospitality, logistics, trading, distribution and the downstream oil and gas sector. But the more revealing part of his public profile lies outside the boardroom.

In his home community of Ezinifite in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State —the man widely recognised as Okwunze Aguata and 7 Star General has invested in infrastructure projects, including a major road construction initiative aimed at improving access, movement and economic activity. His interventions have also been associated with youth empowerment, educational support and assistance to vulnerable members of society.

There are businessmen who accumulate wealth, and there are entrepreneurs whose success begins to acquire a social dimension. The latter are often remembered differently because their legacy is no longer confined to financial records.

This, perhaps, is the context in which Obele’s latest recognitions should be understood.

Speaking on the development, Nigerian Media Expert and Public Analyst Njoku Macdonald Obinna described Obele’s emergence as a significant example of the changing expectations of successful Nigerian entrepreneurs.

“The interesting thing about Chief Anthony Ikenna Obele is that his recent recognitions are telling one consistent story. AMTY recognised the businessman, ASA Europe recognised the community-minded leader, while the Nollywood Europe Golden Awards recognised the philanthropist. Different platforms, different honours, but the same underlying message: impact.”

Njoku Macdonald Obinna argued that modern entrepreneurship should be judged by more than profit and expansion.

“A business can generate wealth, but leadership is demonstrated by what that wealth makes possible for other people. When enterprise creates jobs, supports communities, develops infrastructure and gives people hope, it becomes more than commerce. It becomes social capital.”

Nollywood remains one of Nigeria’s most visible cultural exports to the world, while the country’s entrepreneurs and philanthropists represent another dimension of its influence. Obele’s journey sits comfortably at that intersection where enterprise meets social responsibility and personal success begins to assume a wider public value.

For a man who has received the AMTY Business Icon of the Year honour, the ASA Europe Honorary Patron recognition and now the Nollywood Europe Golden Awards Uncommon Philanthropist Award within a relatively short period.

But beyond the awards, the occasion offered a glimpse of something more significant: the emergence of a Nigerian entrepreneurial model in which success is expected to travel beyond the individual and leave measurable value in its wake.

From Awka to Europe, from business recognition to philanthropic honour, Chief Dr. Anthony Ikenna Obele’s recent journey suggests that the most enduring form of success may ultimately be the one that can be seen not only in what a man owns, but in what remains after he has passed through.
