Gov’t to organise celebrations for Boma-Badingilo’s UNESCO World Heritage listing

The Ministry of Culture, Museums and National Heritage has announced plans to organise an official celebration for the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape following its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In July, UNESCO listed the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape as a World Heritage Site, making it the first site in South Sudan to receive the designation.
In a statement issued yesterday, the ministry said a meeting was held with line ministries, stakeholders and partners, including the UNESCO Juba Office, the UNESCO National Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to discuss preparations for the celebration.
The meeting, chaired by the ministry’s Undersecretary, Dr. Julia Amon Wantok, agreed to form a national committee to organise the event.
The ministry did not give a date for the celebration but said the committee will coordinate preparations and promote the protection and sustainable management of the site.
Participants also agreed to involve the government, local communities, technical institutions and international partners in conserving and promoting the landscape.
The Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape is home to the Great Nile Migration, involving approximately six million antelope that move year-round across the region.
