FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have suspended further stages of the electoral process at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The elections scheduled for September 27 have been put on hold, MyJoyOnline reports.

    Visit to Abuja

Representatives of FIFA and CAF plan to travel to Abuja to hold meetings with stakeholders and examine the circumstances surrounding the federation. The decision was made amid reports of an allegedly reached agreement between FIFA and Nigeria’s National Sports Commission on proposed football governance reforms.

At the same time, FIFA rejected claims that a final agreement on the reforms had already been reached. In a September 7 letter to NFF acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, FIFA Director of Member Associations Elkhan Mammadov stated that FIFA and CAF are assessing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications of the federation’s current situation.

    Changes in the federation

The intervention by international football organizations came after personnel changes in Nigerian football. NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s executive committee resigned amid intensifying criticism of the national teams’ results.

Nigeria’s men’s national team, the Super Eagles, did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The women’s team, the Super Falcons, failed to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup for the first time in its history. Several of the country’s youth national teams also failed to qualify for major continental and world tournaments.
