Protesters took to the streets across five European countries on Saturday, raising demands over living costs, pensions, housing, education, corruption and war. Demonstrations turned violent in parts of France, Albania and Italy, prompting police deployments, arrests and the use of tear gas.

The gatherings reflected different national grievances rather than a single, coordinated movement. In Spain, protesters demanded stronger pension protections; in Portugal, affordable housing was a central concern.

    NEARLY 1,000 ARRESTS IN FRANCE

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said nearly 1,000 people had been arrested during Saturday’s protests and warned that the figure could rise. The government estimated nationwide participation at 410,000, while organisers put it at nearly 800,000.

Authorities said the Paris demonstration had been dispersed along the Cours de Vincennes following clashes. Police used water cannons and tear gas after projectiles were thrown at officers, according to France 24.

The making of a medical and social emergency

The prefectural police said a gendarmerie helicopter had been deployed to support ground units and locate remaining groups. Authorities described more than 500 people present towards the end of the demonstration as “rioters”.

“As I speak to you, we are at nearly 1,000 arrests,” Nuñez said, comparing the figure with 385 arrests recorded by the same point the previous Saturday, when violence and looting had also occurred.

French left-wing leader and presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon criticised the police response. In posts on X, he accused officers of provoking disorder and television channels of focusing on confrontations while overlooking peaceful demonstrators. He also alleged that two people had suffered mutilating injuries.

US President Donald Trump separately invoked the unrest at a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, blaming France’s immigration policies. The supplied report did not establish a connection between immigration and the demonstrations.

    CLASHES IN ALBANIA AND ITALY

In Albania, thousands gathered in Tirana for another anti-government protest involving students, artists and political groups.

Police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators. According to Euronews, government buildings were attacked and dozens of people detained. Authorities said more than 300 protesters and police personnel had been injured.

In Italy, demonstrations took place in cities including Milan, Rome, Turin, Naples, Bologna and Florence. Some participants threw bottles, stones and firecrackers.

Police said nine people were arrested and 371 briefly detained during demonstrations across eight cities. Of those taken to police stations, 110 were minors.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked law enforcement personnel, saying they had protected public safety and the right to peaceful protest despite attempts by “violent individuals” to provoke clashes.

“The right to demonstrate must always be guaranteed, just as the right of citizens to live their cities in safety must be,” she wrote on X.

Meloni said measures approved by the Council of Ministers were intended to strengthen the authorities’ ability to prevent violence.

PENSIONS IN SPAIN, HOUSING IN PORTUGAL

In Madrid, demonstrators demanded that pension increases reflect actual inflation and called for higher minimum pensions linked to the minimum wage.

Their demands also included closing the gender pension gap and protecting the public pension system against privatisation.

In Portugal, protesters marched over housing costs, making access to affordable homes a central demand.

Across the countries, the demonstrations brought concerns about household finances and public policy onto the streets, while clashes in several cities sharpened disputes over policing and the protection of peaceful protest.
