Certification streamlines approval process for DNV classed vessels

Econowind has received a Type Approval Design Certificate from DNV for its VentoFoil 3 Series boundary layer suction wing, marking a step that could simplify the installation of wind assisted propulsion systems on DNV classed vessels.

The certificate confirms that the 16 metre VentoFoil 3 Series complies with DNV’s ST 0511 standard for Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems. As a result, shipowners and shipyards can integrate the certified design without repeating a full design assessment for every individual project. That can shorten approval timelines for both retrofit and newbuild programmes.

Growing demand for wind assisted propulsion

With more than 150 VentoFoils sold, the 3 Series is currently Econowind’s most widely deployed product. The system generates forward thrust by actively controlling airflow around the wing, helping vessels reduce fuel consumption while lowering exposure to FuelEU compliance costs.

The design also features a tilting foundation, allowing the wings to be lowered during port operations or adverse weather. Could that flexibility encourage more operators to consider wind propulsion when <a href="https://absafricatv.com/tax-planning-essentials-for-small-businesses-entering-global-markets/” title=”Tax Planning Essentials for Small Businesses Entering Global Markets”>planning fleet upgrades?

Industry confidence supported by independent approval

Chiel de Leeuw, Chief Commercial Officer at Econowind, said the approval provides DNV classed shipowners with confidence that the system meets recognised industry standards while simplifying integration into future projects.

Hasso Hoffmeister, Senior Principal Engineer at DNV Maritime, noted that the number of vessels operating with wind assisted propulsion systems has increased fivefold since 2022 and has now exceeded 100 vessels. He added that continued advances in technology, materials and manufacturing capacity are expected to support further market growth.

The first vessel operating under the new Type Approval Design Certificate is MS Heinz, managed by HS Schiffahrt.
