U-17 Women’s World Cup 2026: How Nigeria ending North Korea’s 18-match unbeaten run can inspire African women’s football

Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over defending champions DPR Korea did more than secure a place in the Round of 16 on Friday. It ended an extraordinary unbeaten run and reminded Africa that its young footballers can challenge the world’s most accomplished teams.

Nigeria’s Flamingos did not just defeat the defending champions at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. They brought an end to a remarkable run of dominance and delivered a statement that should resonate across African women’s football.

The Flamingos’ emphatic 3–1 victory over DPR Korea on Friday, October 23, was a defining moment for Nigeria’s campaign and atage. It ended the Asian side’s 18-match unbeaten run in regulation time at the tournament, a streak stretching back to November 14, 2018.

DPR Korea had established itself as a formidable force in the competition, winning consecutive titles in 2018 and 2024. The North Koreans arrived in the decisive Group B fixture after scoring 12 goals and conceding just once in their opening two matches, including a 6–0 victory over Puerto Rico and a 6–1 demolition of Poland.

On paper, the numbers made the defending champions formidable opponents. On the pitch, however, Nigeria demonstrated that reputation and previous achievements do not determine the outcome of a football match.

Adegbuyi, Umejiaku and Yusuf Lead Nigeria’s Statement Victory

The Flamingos approached the contest with the conviction that they could compete with the champions rather than simply contain them.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi set the tone in the 15th minute, using her individual quality to beat her marker before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Kim Son Gyong.

Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku finished a precise pass from Tosin Rafiu, giving the Flamingos a deserved 2–0 lead at half-time.

The Nigerian side returned after the interval without surrendering its attacking ambition. In the 56th minute, Kanyinsola Yusuf curled a superb free-kick into the net to stretch the advantage to three goals and put the defending champions under enormous pressure.

DPR Korea reduced the deficit through Yu Jong-hyang’s 82nd-minute penalty, but Nigeria remained composed to secure a memorable victory.

The result confirmed Nigeria’s qualification for the Round of 16, with the Flamingos finishing second in Group B on six points after a 2–1 opening defeat to Poland and a 2–0 win over Puerto Rico.

An Extraordinary Run Finally Comes to an End

The significance of the result becomes clearer when placed against DPR Korea’s history at the tournament.

According to FIFA records, the North Koreans had gone 2,900 days without a defeat in regulation time at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Their last such loss came against Germany on November 14, 2018, when they were beaten 4–1.

During that period, DPR Korea won the 2018 and 2024 editions, reinforcing its reputation as one of the leading powers in youth women’s football.

Nigeria’s victory therefore represented more than three points in the group standings. It demonstrated that even a team with such an imposing record can be challenged when an opponent combines tactical discipline, courage, technical quality and a clear plan.

The Flamingos did not need to match DPR Korea’s reputation. They needed to execute their own game plan and they did so with impressive conviction.

A Lesson in Belief for Africa’s Young Footballers

For African football, the message is significant.

Young players across the continent often encounter opponents whose recent results, international rankings and tournament histories can appear intimidating before a ball is kicked. Nigeria’s performance provides a practical reminder that those factors need not dictate a team’s ambition.

The Flamingos showed that African sides can compete against established powers by preparing thoroughly, trusting their abilities and remaining disciplined when the pressure rises.

This is not a suggestion that one victory resolves the wider challenges facing African women’s football. Differences in facilities, competition structures, player development, coaching reresult of this magnitude can strengthen the belief that African teams have the potential to overcome elite opposition

Nigeria’s performance also offers a useful lesson for the continent’s football administrators – talent must be supported by consistent investment, competitive opportunities, quality coaching and pathways that allow young players to develop beyond a single tournament.

A famous victory can inspire the next generation. Sustained development is what turns inspiration into lasting progress.

Nigeria’s Achievement Can Inspire Other African Teams

The Flamingos’ triumph arrives at a moment when African women’s football continues to pursue greater recognition and consistency on the global stage.

For the continent’s other representatives and aspiring youth teams, Nigeria’s achievement provides encouragement without creating unrealistic expectations. Every team faces a different draw, different opponents and different challenges. The lesson is not that victories over defending champions should be automatic, but that African teams should approach such contests with ambition rather than fear.

Nigeria have shown that a team can recover from a disappointing opening result, reassess its approach and respond with two consecutive victories to reach the knockout stage.

That resilience matters as much as the scoreline. At major tournaments, a setback can derail a campaign if confidence disappears. The Flamingos instead used their opening defeat to Poland as a reason to improve, first overcoming Puerto Rico before producing their most significant performance against DPR Korea.

Their journey is a reminder that tournament football rewards teams capable of learning quickly, adapting tactically and delivering when the stakes are highest.

Busari’s Tactical Plan Delivers Against the Champions

Head coach Akeem Busari deserves recognition for preparing his team to confront an opponent whose pace and attacking movement had caused problems for other sides.

After the match, Busari explained that Nigeria had worked to disrupt DPR Korea’s preferred patterns and maintain a numerical advantage in key defensive areas.

He said the team’s courage was important, particularly given the contrast between the sides’ opening results. DPR Korea had scored 12 goals in two games, while Nigeria had suffered an opening defeat before recovering against Puerto Rico.

The Nigerian approach combined defensive organisation with the willingness to attack when opportunities emerged. Rather than becoming overwhelmed by the champions’ reputation, the Flamingos took their chances and made their advantage count.

The three goals also reflected different aspects of their attacking quality: Adegbuyi’s individual skill, Umejiaku’s composed finish and Yusuf’s excellent free-kick.

Such variety will be important as Nigeria enter the knockout stage, where every opponent brings a fresh tactical challenge and there is little room for recovery after defeat.

A Victory to Build On, Not a Destination

Nigeria’s achievement deserves celebration, but the next challenge is to ensure that the victory becomes a foundation for further progress.

The Round of 16 will demand the same intensity, discipline and composure that brought down DPR Korea. The Flamingos must avoid allowing the emotional weight of their historic result to become a distraction from the work ahead.

For the rest of Africa, the significance of this result should extend beyond Nigeria’s immediate campaign. It should encourage greater belief in youth development, stronger support for women’s football and a determination to build teams capable of competing consistently at international level.

The Flamingos have already secured their place in the knockout stage and ended one of the most remarkable unbeaten runs in the competition’s history. What comes next will determine how far this particular team can progress.

But the wider message has already been delivered. DPR Korea arrived in Morocco as defending champions with an extraordinary record. Nigeria met them with courage, tactical discipline and the belief that the result could be different. The Flamingos won 3–1 and in doing so, gave African women’s football another reason to believe.
