Key Matchup
Frances Vollett is in contention to make the All-Star Five and even MVP if Canada did cause a big upset. She was superb again in the thrilling Quarter-Final win against China.
Making the game-winning play for her team and showing her composure and consistency. Canada will need a cut and paste display from their in-form baller.
With USA having so much depth, talent and therefore options, it will be interesting to see how much attention they pay to Vollett and who matches up with her. Perhaps it will be Ivanna Wilson Manyacka, and that in turn gives Vollett plenty to focus on and a fantastic matchup to watch.
Stats Don’t Lie
As you might expect, the stats are all heavily skewed in favor of USA when it comes to the team comparison. Especially their offensive firepower with more points in the paint at 52.0 compared to 30.4 for Canada. They also punish turnovers with a huge 38.6 compared to 14.8.
Canada can at least take heart from the fact they are a better defensive rebounding team on paper with 34.8 boards against 30.2 for USA.
The Killer Questions
For Canada it is mainly about staying in contention for as long as possible, but primarily about whether they have the scoring punch to keep pace and if they can be bold and attack USA in the paint. The big question for them is whether their guards can come to the party? They have been inconsistent so far and only impressed in patches.
For USA, quite simply, can they get the ball moving? It all feels a little 1v1 at times and the ball is getting ‘stuck’ too much. The rare times they have made 4 or 5 passes, it’s looked great, but these moments have been few and far between. This has not been a great USA basketball team performance so far.
Game History
This is a repeat of the 2024 Final when USA triumphed 84-64 against their neighbors. Current Canadian guard Avery Arije played in that historic game which was her nation’s first Final in the competition.
In terms of Semi-Finals, the teams first met at this stage in Amsterdam in 2012 with USA winning 84-59. Then in 2022 in Debrecen, USA swept their way to a similarly commanding 87-57 victory.
