Russia has outlined the specific conditions under which citizens of select African countries may travel to the country without obtaining a visa, with the terms differing considerably based on both nationality and passport type.

The information was published on the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official consular portal, which details the global scope of Moscow’s visa-free arrangements.

Which African country made the cut?

African nations appear narrowly on the list, and the conditions attached to most of them are considerably limited.

South Africa is the only African country granted broad visa-free access to Russia. Citizens carrying any category of South African passport may enter Russia for a period of up to 90 days without a visa.

The exemption covers tourism and general visits, but explicitly excludes travel for the purposes of employment, study, or taking up permanent residence.

Which African countries are covered under diplomatic exemptions?

Every other African nation on the list operates under a far narrower arrangement.

Citizens from Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Republic of Congo, Senegal, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe qualify for visa-free entry only if they hold diplomatic or service passports.

Kenya missed out on the list.

Ordinary citizens travelling on standard passports from any of these countries are still required to apply for a visa before travelling to Russia.

Zimbabwe carries the most restrictive terms of all the listed nations. Visa-free entry applies solely to employees of official Zimbabwean institutions based in Russia, and even then, only those travelling on diplomatic or service passports are covered.

For the vast majority of African travellers, the practical implication is clear: a visa remains a requirement for entry into Russia unless the traveller holds a South African passport or a diplomatic or service passport from one of the 16 listed countries.

Who can travel to Jamaica visa-free?

Meanwhile, the official list of African countries that can enter Jamaica without a visa was released by the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency.

The majority of African nations on Jamaica’s list of visa-free entry are Commonwealth members.

Nationality-specific entry rules differ, and certain passengers may be subject to stay restrictions or extra paperwork.
