The Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed an access to information request to find the real impact that Operation Prosper has had on Cape Town’s gang hotspots.
Operation Prosper was launched as a joint initiative between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to address organised crime across South Africa.

Two weeks ago, acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia conceded that not a single gang had been dismantled as a result of the work of Operation Prosper. He also said the operation’s focus would now move to actively disabling and dismantling identified criminal groupings.
The DA’s Nicholas Gotsell said accessing the report was a necessary oversight to ascertain details of the impact the operation had on tackling gangsterism.
“Operation Prosper has cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of rands and yet communities are still living in fear while gangs continue to roam the streets. The DA has now filed PAIA applications because South Africans deserve to know what this operation has actually achieved. We want the facts: how many illegal firearms have been recovered, how many gangsters have been arrested, and how many cases have actually made it to court? If government expects the public to trust this operation, it must stop hiding the report and start providing answers.”
