The 2026 FIFA World Cup has failed to produce a clear favorite for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, setting the stage for an intense battle ahead of the ceremony in London on October 26.

Lionel Messi strengthened his case by scoring eight goals and providing four assists as he guided Argentina to the final, while Kylian Mbappé claimed the Golden Boot with 10 goals and four assists. Spain lifted the World Cup, but neither Lamine Yamal nor Rodri produced a campaign strong enough to separate themselves from the rest of the contenders.

Several other players also remain firmly in contention. Fabián Ruiz completed another successful season after winning both the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup, while Pau Cubarsí earned the tournament’s Best Young Player award. Michael Olise finished as the competition’s top assist provider with seven assists, and Harry Kane combined a productive World Cup with another prolific campaign for Bayern Munich.

Paris Saint-Germain also boasts several candidates. Ousmane Dembélé followed his Champions League triumph with six goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia impressed throughout the European campaign despite missing the tournament. Vitinha, João Neves, Willian Pacho and Nuno Mendes also remain outside contenders, leaving the 2026 Ballon d’Or race more open than ever.
