Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has pushed for next-gen, ‘Made in Japan’ robots. The AI company recently joined forces with Japan’s top tech and industrial heavyweights for a massive push into “physical AI”, which are smart, futuristic robots that can think independently rather than just following rigid, pre-programmed instructions. The collaboration brings together Nvidia’s AI computing power with Fujitsu, Japan’s manufacturing powerhouse. Announcing the deal in Tokyo alongside Huang were Fujitsu CEO Takahito Tokita, as well as the CEOs of Japan’s premier industrial robotics manufacturers: Fanuc Corp., Yaskawa Electric Corp., and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The initiative aims to build advanced autonomous machines capable of working safely alongside humans in everyday environments, including factories, commercial warehouses and hospitals.
Harnessing ‘Made in Japan’ precision for safe AI
Speaking at the launch event, Huang emphasised that physical AI requires the absolute highest standards of manufacturing precision to avoid potential safety hazards. Huang noted that Japan’s cultural commitment to craftsmanship makes it the perfect birthplace for this technology.“Japan’s excellence is a philosophy, a way of life. ‘Made in Japan’ means the highest quality, the highest precision. Japan sets the standard for the state-of-the-art in modern manufacturing,” Huang said. Huang praised traditional Japanese manufacturing philosophies like kaizen (the concept of continuous, incremental improvement) as the ideal foundation for training neural networks that must safely navigate human spaces.The first practical phase of this new collaboration is slated to roll out later this year. While the executives noted that the creation of a formal joint corporate venture could happen down the line, no specific timeline was given for when these independent robots will become a standard fixture in daily civilian life.
Curing aging nation’s labour crisis
The goal of the alliance goes far beyond factory automation as it aims to solve Japan’s acute, systemic labor shortage. As one of the most rapidly aging societies in the developed world, Japan faces a severe deficit of working-age citizens. The companies hope that physical AI can eventually step in to handle heavy industrial labor and assist in healthcare, managing day-to-day care for the country’s growing population of elderly citizens living alone.The partnership arrives at a crucial moment for Japan’s tech sector, which has openly acknowledged falling behind the US and China in the initial generative AI boom. To bridge the gap, the government of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently announced a national strategy to drum up over 370 trillion yen ($2.3 trillion) in combined public and private technology investments by 2040.
