Trump's AI security agency head resigns after 3 months; Arvind Raman named acting chief

Chris Fall, the head of the United States Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), has resigned just three months after taking charge of the federal artificial intelligence (AI) testing institute. According to Axios, the US Commerce Department confirmed the departure, announcing that Dr. Arvind Raman, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will step in to serve as the acting director of the agency. The resignation comes at a crucial moment as the Trump administration grapples with setting safety guidelines, evaluation benchmarks and national standards for rapidly evolving AI technologies. Fall was appointed in April to lead the newly-reorganised federal body. CAISI was established after the administration restructured the former US AI Safety Institute, and it is tasked with developing rigorous testing capabilities and evaluation protocols to ensure advanced AI systems can be deployed safely without posing national security risks.A Commerce Department official clarified that his tenure was always intended to be temporary to help set up the agency’s foundational framework.“Following Chris’s departure, NIST Director Dr. Arvind Raman will continue to oversee CAISI and will serve as Acting CAISI Director,” Commerce spokesperson Kristen Eichamer said in an official statement to the publication.

    NIST academic to take over

Dr. Arvind Raman, an academic and former dean of engineering at Purdue University, who was officially sworn in as the director of NIST on June 30, will now dual-hat his duties. He will lead both NIST and CAISI while the administration searches for a permanent replacement. According to department officials, Raman has spent several weeks interviewing potential candidates to take over CAISI permanently. However, until a permanent appointment is finalised, the federal AI safety office will operate under temporary leadership during a delicate period.
