Wildlife Tourism Sees a Major Surge

A recent study by the travel company Explore has revealed a sharp rise in demand for wildlife-focused vacations. The survey, which included 2,400 participants across 12 countries, analyzed Google search trends over the past year and found that queries for ‘wildlife holidays’ jumped by 211%. For 72% of respondents, the chance to observe wild animals is now a key factor when picking a travel destination.

Australia was ranked the number one country for such trips by 38% of those surveyed, highlighting its appeal for wildlife enthusiasts. South Africa came in second with 11% of the vote, followed by Kenya at 9%. Canada and China rounded out the top five, with 7% and 6% respectively.

    • Giant panda – 41% of participants want to see this animal. The best spots for viewing are the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Wolong National Nature Reserve.
    • Elephant – 32% of respondents hope to see elephants, most commonly found in Botswana’s Chobe National Park.
    • Kangaroo – Also drawing 32% interest. Top locations include Kangaroo Island and Murramarang National Park in New South Wales.
    • Koala – 30% of those surveyed wish to see koalas, with Kangaroo Island and the Port Stephens region being prime viewing areas.
    • Whales – 29% of respondents expressed a desire to see whales, particularly in Hermanus, South Africa, and Mirissa, Sri Lanka.

This growing interest in wildlife travel signals a shift in tourism priorities, where ecological factors and a desire to connect with nature are becoming increasingly important. It may reflect heightened awareness of environmental and conservation issues. Travel companies can adapt their offerings by emphasizing sustainable practices and wildlife observation opportunities to meet this rising demand.

As the demand for wildlife vacations rises, it’s interesting to note that nearly half of Europeans are now choosing trips specifically to acquire new skills. This shift in travel motivation reflects broader changes in tourism preferences, emphasizing the importance of enriching experiences.
