Wildlife Tourism Sees a Major Surge
A recent study by the travel company Explore has revealed a sharp rise in demand for wildlife-focused vacations. The survey, which included 2,400 participants across 12 countries, analyzed Google search trends over the past year and found that queries for ‘wildlife holidays’ jumped by 211%. For 72% of respondents, the chance to observe wild animals is now a key factor when picking a travel destination.
Top Destinations and Most-Wanted Animals
Australia was ranked the number one country for such trips by 38% of those surveyed, highlighting its appeal for wildlife enthusiasts. South Africa came in second with 11% of the vote, followed by Kenya at 9%. Canada and China rounded out the top five, with 7% and 6% respectively.
- Giant panda – 41% of participants want to see this animal. The best spots for viewing are the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Wolong National Nature Reserve.
- Elephant – 32% of respondents hope to see elephants, most commonly found in Botswana’s Chobe National Park.
- Kangaroo – Also drawing 32% interest. Top locations include Kangaroo Island and Murramarang National Park in New South Wales.
- Koala – 30% of those surveyed wish to see koalas, with Kangaroo Island and the Port Stephens region being prime viewing areas.
- Whales – 29% of respondents expressed a desire to see whales, particularly in Hermanus, South Africa, and Mirissa, Sri Lanka.
