Few South Africans have heard of the Southern African Wildlife College, and fewer still know that this conservation powerhouse is located on the edge of the Kruger National Park.
This institution trains the rangers, scientists and land managers who protect some of the continent’s most important wildlife areas.
It rarely makes headlines, but its work shapes the future of conservation across the region.
WHERE THE COLLEGE STANDS
The Southern African Wildlife College is located near Hoedspruit, on the border of the Kruger National Park, placing students in the middle of a real conservation landscape.
Lessons happen in the bush rather than only in classrooms. Rangers, ecologists and community leaders travel from across Africa to train there each year.
The institution was built on a simple idea: protect wildlife by developing the people who manage it. That approach has shaped its programmes for decades, and it still drives every new partnership the college signs.
HOW THE COLLEGE BUILDS CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIPS ABROAD
In June, chief executive Theresa Sowry and marketing executive Jeanné Poultney travelled through Europe to meet long-standing donors and partners of the Southern African Wildlife College.
The trip began in Malmö, Sweden, where they met Aimpoint‘s new leadership to reflect on a relationship that started in 2011.
From there, the pair moved to Parma, Italy, where discussions with the University of Parma advanced plans for a student exchange. Up to four Italian students will join the college in 2027, and the visit also opened talks with researchers in regenerative agriculture and veterinary science.
In Amsterdam, the team met partners from the COmON Foundation and Commonland Foundation to discuss landscape-scale conservation work.
In London, they reviewed a grant with the University of Kent’s Durrell Institute, which funds ranger training across the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, a region that spans five countries.
WHAT THE FUNDING SUPPORTS
Tusk, a UK-based conservation charity, remains one of the key supporters of the Southern African Wildlife College. Sowry described its backing as more than money, because it strengthens leadership and builds resilience across the region’s conservation programmes.
The European trip ended in Zürich and Geneva, where the team met Friends of African Wildlife and the Foundation Audemars-Watkins. Both relationships fund training, applied research and ranger deployment under the college’s Strategy 2030.
Poultney called the annual trip essential, since it lets the team share measurable results with the people who fund them. The zigzag across five countries, she said, proves how far a small institution’s influence can travel.
Most people driving from Hoedspruit to Orpen Gate will never notice the Southern African Wildlife College. Yet its graduates patrol reserves, its research shapes policy, and its partnerships stretch across the globe.
For an institution so few people recognise, its reach across African conservation runs remarkably deep.
