Microsoft co-founder and
Gates Foundation Chair Bill Gates visited Carnegie Mellon University Africa
(CMU-Africa) in Kigali, where he met with students and faculty working on
digital public infrastructure (DPI) initiatives aimed at advancing digital transformation
across Africa.
The visit formed part of the
second day of Gates’ engagements in Rwanda and was hosted by Rwanda’s Minister
of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire.
During the visit, Gates
interacted with members of the Upanzi Network, a CMU-Africa initiative focused
on developing digital public infrastructure solutions for the continent through
research, innovation and collaboration.
Discussions highlighted the
role of the university in developing digital talent and supporting the creation
of technology solutions that address Africa’s development priorities.
The visit also showcased the
contributions of CMU-Africa graduates to Rwanda’s digital transformation, with
several alumni playing a key role in the development of the country’s digital
payment platform, eKash.
