Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, has announced plans to launch a new regional airline. The move comes just months after the three nations unveiled their joint regional passport, a symbol of their commitment to deepening ties and fostering regional cooperation.
A spokesperson for the AES revealed that the airline will be a priority project for the Confederation, stating, “The establishment of the regional airline of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is a priority, and we will soon have a company in the colours of the AES, which will connect our capitals and serve other destinations.” The airline will initially link the three countries’ capitals — Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Niamey (Niger), and Bamako (Mali) — with plans to expand to other African and international destinations as the airline grows.
This new airline, expected to foster both economic and cultural exchange, is part of the AES’s broader efforts to enhance regional autonomy and reduce dependency on foreign airlines. The countries have long sought greater economic integration, and the airline is seen as a vital component of these ambitions. The venture aligns with their shared vision for a unified Sahel region, one that can move freely and efficiently across borders.
The airline’s launch will also be an economic boon, creating numerous job opportunities in the aviation and hospitality industries, as well as strengthening trade and tourism links across the three nations.

The AES’s announcement comes at a time when the Sahel region is facing numerous challenges, including security concerns and economic hardship. By introducing this airline, the AES aims to showcase regional resilience and self-reliance. The airline will not only serve as a symbol of cooperation but will also serve practical purposes by enabling faster and more affordable travel for citizens and businesses within the Sahel.
Details on the airline’s name, fleet, routes, and ticketing plans are still being finalized, but the three countries have committed to making this project a reality in the near future. With international and local partnerships already under consideration, the AES airline has the potential to become a cornerstone of regional air travel and an essential player in Africa’s growing aviation sector.
In the meantime, the AES’s passport initiative continues to be a hallmark of their regional vision, and with the airline in the works, the Sahel nations may be signaling to the world that their future will be one of greater unity and collaboration.
