Afreximbank reports profit growth in 2026
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its subsidiaries have recorded a US$813.5 million net income in the latest financial results reported by the bank for the nine months that ended on 30 September 2026. This was a 24 percent increase from US$654.3 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, reflecting resilient growth in the bank’s operations, sound asset quality, and continued support for trade and economic development across Africa and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Further, the group’s total assets and contingencies rose by 12 percent to US$54.1 billion, from US$48.5 billion at the end of FY2025. This growth was supported by the bank’s expansion of its lending portfolio, with net loans and advances increasing by 8 percent to US$36.2 billion, in comparison to US$33.5 billion at year-end 2025.
Afreximbank expands lending and income
The group’s gross income rose to US$2.7 billion in the reporting period, representing an 11 percent growth from the prior period. This was supported by continued balance sheet growth and strong earnings generation and reflected sustained demand for trade and project financing across the bank’s member countries.
According to the lender, this positive performance was largely driven by a 9.1 percent increase in interest income to US$2.4 billion, from US$2.2 billion in the same reporting period in 2025, supported by growth in average loan balances, which increased from US$28.9 billion in the nine months in 2025 to US$34.8 billion for the nine reported months in 2026.
Net interest and fee income strengthen
Net interest income increased by 15 percent to US$1.5 billion, further contributing to the group’s earnings growth.
The bank also recorded an increase in revenue from unfunded business activities, including guarantees, letters of credit, and advisory services, which increased to US$136.9 million, from US$117.2 million in the prior-year period.
Afreximbank maintains operational efficiency
The group’s cost-to-income ratio improved to 20 percent for the nine months ended September 2026, compared with 21 percent in the corresponding period of 2025, remaining below the bank’s 30 percent ceiling. This reflects Afreximbank’s continued control over operating costs relative to income.
Return on average shareholders’ equity remained stable at 12 percent, with shareholders’ funds increasing to US$9.0 billion, from US$8.4 billion at the end of 2025, while return on average assets improved to 2.48 percent from 2.34 percent a year earlier.
Afreximbank’s non-performing loans ratio stood at 2.48 percent, compared with 2.43 percent as of December 31, 2025. The increase indicates a slight rise in the share of loans classified as non-performing.
However, the lender’s provisions for expected credit losses amounted to US$537.6 million, compared with US$481.3 million in the corresponding period of 2025. These provisions reflect the bank’s allocation for potential credit losses as it expands its lending activities.
Afreximbank retains capital and liquidity buffers
The group reported liquid assets of US$6.1 billion, equivalent to 13 percent of total assets, compared with 15 percent at the end of 2025.
The capital adequacy ratio stood at 22 percent, down from 23 percent at the end of 2025. The ratio reflects the group’s capital position relative to its risk-weighted exposures as it continues financing trade and development projects across Africa and the Caribbean.
Denys Denya, Afreximbank’s Senior Executive Vice President: “This performance underscores Afreximbank’s ability to deliver strong and sustainable performance while continuing to fulfil its development mandate across Africa and the Carribean. Our expanded lending portfolio, robust profitability and strong capital position demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy and the growing relevance of our interventions across our target markets. As global economic and geopolitical uncertainties persist, Afreximbank remains committed to providing the financing, trade facilitation and strategic investments needed to strengthen regional value chains, support industrialisation and accelerate the continent’s economic transformation.”
