The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains “extremely serious” amid continuous transmission, Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said Wednesday as the death toll surpassed 3,000.
At least 3,009 people have died from Ebola from 6,206 confirmed cases since its outbreak in May, according to the Africa CDC.
Jean Kaseya, the director-general of Africa CDC, said when the outbreak was declared on May 15, it affected one province and two health zones but has since spread to 60 health zones across six provinces.
This is an area of approximately 240,000 square kilometers, comparable to the size of the United Kingdom and nearly five times the size of Switzerland.
“Despite the considerable efforts of the government and partners, we are not yet where we need to be,” Kaseya said in a post on US social media company X.
“We will not relent until this outbreak is brought under control.”
He said the outbreak remains Africa CDC’s highest priority, with the organization working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners to support the government in strengthening every aspect of the response.
Affected provinces include Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Bas-Uele and Tshopo provinces.
The Health Ministry said 1,409 people have recovered while 830 patients remain in isolation or hospital.
WHO on Wednesday issued new emergency guidance on the use of licensed Ebola vaccines during Bundibugyo virus disease outbreaks, following an Extraordinary Meeting of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization.
Since evidence remains insufficient to support the programmatic use of the Ervebo vaccine for the prevention of Bundibugyo virus, WHO recommended that Ervebo should only be used within the context of a research protocol.
