Africa50, NTPC sign deal on African energy investment

Africa50 and India’s NTPC Limited have signed a cooperation agreement to identify and develop power-generation projects and cross-border electricity trading opportunities across Africa. The partnership aims to mobilise investment, strengthen regional power systems and expand reliable electricity supplies for households and businesses.

The agreement combines Africa50’s infrastructure project development and financing expertise with NTPC’s engineering, construction and operational capabilities. The two organisations will work to identify commerciallyunities towards implementation

Africa50 identifies priority power investment opportunities

Africa50 will use its pipeline of infrastructure projects and relationships with governments and regulators across its 34 African shareholder countries to identify priority opportunities. Its role will include structuring projects for investment and supporting their development through the project lifecycle.

The partnership is intended to help turn national and regional energy priorities into projects capable of attracting financing and private sector participation, supporting electricity generation and cross-border power trade.

NTPC contributes engineering and operational expertise

NTPC, India’s largest power utility, will contribute technical expertise spanning engineering, project development, construction management and operations. The company will assess project feasibility, develop technical solutions and support the progression of selected projects towards implementation in mutually agreed African countries.

Alain Ebobisse, Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa50: “Reliable and competitively priced power is central to Africa’s industrial and economic transformation. This partnership combines Africa50’s ability to develop, de-risk and deliver investable projects with NTPC’s proven technical expertise to translate public ambition into private investment in power generation. Together, we aim to strengthen regional power systems that support industrial growth, expand trade and create jobs.”

    Partnership targets regional electricity trade

The agreement also focuses on opportunities to expand cross-border electricity trading, which can help countries improve access to power and make better use of regional generation capacity. Coordinated investment in generation and interconnected power systems can support industrial development and strengthen regional energy markets.

Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited: “We look forward to working with Africa50 to develop commerciallyombining NTPC’s technical and operational experience with Africa50’s project development capabilities and relationships across the continent creates a strong foundation for supporting reliable power supply and regional electricity trade.”

    India-Africa cooperation supports infrastructure development

The agreement strengthens commercial cooperation between India and Africa in the energy sector. By combining project development capabilities with technical and operational experience, Africa50 and NTPC aim to advance power infrastructure that supports economic activity across the continent.

The partners will focus on opportunities that can attract investment, expand electricity supply and improve regional connectivity, with project development and implementation dependent on the assessment of individual opportunities.
