Fans in Albuquerque are watching the tournament with excitement as the United States faces a must-win match
For many in Albuquerque, the World Cup is not just about who wins. Fans said they enjoy seeing different cultures come together and celebrating the game they love
The tournament has sparked friendly family bragging rights for some Mexican Americans, with relatives in both the U.S. and Mexico cheering for different teams
“They obviously, since they’re over there and they’ve lived their whole life over there, they’re rooting for Mexico instead of the U.S.,” Jared Fernandez said. “But as a Mexican American, I root for both. But since I’m from here, I’d like to root a little bit more for America because I just like betting against them.”
Fans also said the best part of the World Cup is how it brings people together and turns strangers into friends, even when they do not speak the same language
“They don’t even speak the same language as you. But yeah, it’s not the first World Cup that I see, but here in the U.S. and Mexico, Canada, it’s beautiful seeing your people be loved by other countries and stuff,” Duilio Villalovos said
