Second-half goals from Ines Khiri and Amira Ould Braham overturned an early deficit after Ines Konan had given Côte d’Ivoire the lead, sending the Fennecs into the semi-finals of the continental competition for the first time in their history.
The victory not only ended Algeria’s long wait for a place among Africa’s last four, but also secured qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, where the four semi-finalists from Morocco 2026 automatically earn Africa’s direct qualification places.
For Farid Benstiti’s side, it was the perfect response to last year’s quarter-final heartbreak, when they were eliminated by Ghana on penalties after a goalless draw.
While Algeria celebrated automatic qualification for Brazil 2027, Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup hopes remain alive despite the defeat.
Under the expanded qualification system, the four losing quarter-finalists will contest an African play-off, with the two winners progressing to the FIFA Women’s World Cup inter-confederation play-offs.
Those two nations will have one final opportunity to secure places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and increase Africa’s representation on the global stage.
Côte d’Ivoire make the brighter start
The match brought together two contrasting styles.
Côte d’Ivoire entered the quarter-final as one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking teams after scoring eight goals during the group stage, while Algeria arrived boasting one of the competition’s strongest defensive records.
The Ivorians settled quickest and looked determined to test Algeria’s well-organised back line.
Their persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Ines Konan broke the deadlock, finishing confidently to reward an impressive first-half display from Reynald Pedros’ side.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically before half-time when Habibou Ouedraogo was shown a red card, reducing Côte d’Ivoire to ten players for the remainder of the contest.
Earlier, Algeria had also been forced into a change after Morgane Ikene departed through injury, with Morgane Belkhiter entering the contest.
Benstiti’s changes transform the contest
Recognising the advantage, Benstiti acted immediately after the interval.
The introduction of Ikram Adjabi and Ines Khiri injected greater urgency into Algeria’s attack, and the substitutions quickly transformed the game.
Khiri rewarded her coach’s faith by drawing Algeria level in the 58th minute, swinging momentum firmly in favour of the North Africans.
Côte d’Ivoire had an immediate opportunity to regain the lead after being awarded a penalty just four minutes later.
But Rebecca Elloh failed to convert from the spot in what proved to be the turning point of the contest.
Algeria seized the opportunity.
Just two minutes later, Marine Dafeur delivered an excellent pass into the path of Amira Ould Braham, who calmly finished in the 64th minute to complete the comeback and give Algeria the lead for the first time.
Defensive discipline seals historic success
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Côte d’Ivoire refused to surrender.
Pedros introduced fresh legs as his side pushed desperately for an equaliser that would force extra time.
But Algeria’s defensive organisation, which had become the hallmark of their campaign, held firm once again.
Goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi marshalled her defence superbly as Algeria repelled sustained late pressure to protect their slender advantage.
When the final whistle sounded, the celebrations reflected the significance of the achievement.
The Fennecs had not only reached the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals for the first time, but had also secured their country’s first qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup through the Women’s AFCON pathway.
Historic milestone for Algeria
Before the match, Benstiti had spoken passionately about his team’s steady growth and their determination to move beyond the quarter-finals after last year’s disappointment.
His players delivered on that ambition.
Having built their tournament around defensive solidity, they also demonstrated resilience, tactical intelligence and composure under pressure to overturn a difficult situation against one of the competition’s most attack-minded teams.
For Côte d’Ivoire, elimination should not overshadow a hugely encouraging tournament. Returning to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a lengthy absence, the Lady Elephants announced themselves once again as an emerging force capable of challenging Africa’s established powers.
For Algeria, however, Saturday’s victory will forever be remembered as one of the greatest days in the history of the women’s national team.
