South Africa proposed protecting the commercial rights to the Springboks’ upcoming rugby tour against New Zealand’s All Blacks, a move aimed at safeguarding sponsorship revenue
Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau is seeking public comment on his department’s plan to designate the Rugby Greatest Rivalry 2026 Tour, which runs from August 7 to September 12 in South Africa, a protected event under the Merchandise Marks Act
He also wants to declare words such as “springboks,” “bokke” and “forever green forever gold” — as well as emblems for both teams and the Sharks, Lions and Bulls local franchises — as prohibited marks
If approved, only authorised sponsors would be able to market themselves as being associated with the series, helping preserve the event’s commercial value for the South African Rugby Union. The proposal is conditional on SARU complying with local procurement laws that promote businesses owned by black South Africans and others classified as disadvantaged under the country’s empowerment policies
Unauthorised businesses could be prevented from suggesting any association with the tour or from using protected branding in their marketing campaigns. The department asked members of the public to comment within 15 days
The move is a sign of the government going against its private sector rather than supporting it a partner at Flux Trends
“These are things that the government has the right to do but we as citizens should question whether that is actually upholding the purpose of why governments exist, which is to protect and to serve the citizenry,” she said
The world-champion Springboks are the highest-ranked men’s rugby union team globally, followed by arch-rivals New Zealand
