Botswana has reported a dangerous increase in the number of its citizens recruited to fight on Moscow’s side in Russia’s war against Ukraine. This was reported by the agency Bloomberg citing a statement from the African country‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Botswana Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that an increasing number of the country’s citizens are being forced to fight on Russia’s side in its war against Ukraine.
The agency urged citizens not to accept job offers without first verifying their authenticity. According to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, many people are being misled, lured into traveling abroad, and then forced to take part in combat operations.
“The number of Botswana citizens being misled by such offers is growing at an alarming rate,” the statement said.
They also noted that they “continue to receive distressing calls from Botswana citizens who are already on the front lines and are describing the dangerous conditions they are facing.”
The article states that people who recruited Africans to fight in the war were arrested and charged in some African countries, including Kenya and South Africa.
In February, a report by the nonprofit organization Inpact, which runs the All Eyes On Wagner program, stated that at least 316 Africans had died fighting against Ukraine. Many of them had minimal military training or no relevant experience at all.
Botswana is a country in southern Africa that has traditionally pursued a neutral foreign policy and has no significant military ties with Russia. To recruit citizens for the war, the Russians use attractive offers of work abroad, which may conceal their true goal—to draw people into combat operations.
