North Luangwa National Park: A Critical Landscape for Black Rhino Conservation in Zambia

Across the remote north of Zambia, the Luangwa River carves through one of Africa’s most intact wilderness landscapes, North Luangwa National Park, a vast, largely unbroken expanse of woodlands, floodplains, and escarpments. It is part of the greater Luangwa Valley ecosystem, a region known for its rich biodiversity and for its remoteness, with few roads, limited human settlements, and large tracts that remain genuinely wild.

North Luangwa is often described as one of the most secluded national parks in Africa. Covering more than 4,600km², it lies to the west of the Luangwa River, opposite South Luangwa National Park. Unlike its southern counterpart, which is more accessible and well known for its tourism, North Luangwa has deliberately been kept low impact, with no permanent tourist lodges inside its core area. This decision has helped maintain the Park’s ecological integrity, but it also means that conservation operations here take place in conditions that are logistically demanding and often physically isolated.

The Rhino Conservation Area and Zambia’s Only Black Rhino Population

Within this landscape sits the Rhino Conservation Area (RCA), a carefully managed and fenced section of the Park where Zambia’s only black rhino population is now found. The North Luangwa Conservation Programme (NLCP) operates this, working in close partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to protect and grow this reintroduced population. The terrain is a mix of dense miombo woodland, riverine forest, and open grassland, shaped by seasonal flooding and long dry seasons that influence both animal movement and patrol strategy.

In the Park, conservation is about protecting wildlife from external threats whilst simultaneously managing space, movement, and connectivity within a vast natural system. The work is carried out by the Rhino Monitoring Unit (RMU) and Fence Line Unit (FLU), whose daily operations link on-the-ground patrols with telemetry data, fence integrity checks, and rapid response deployments. The scale of the landscape means that even routine monitoring can involve long distances, difficult terrain, and sustained periods in the field, often with limited infrastructure support.

How the Rhino Monitoring Unit Supports Black Rhino Conservation in Zambia

The population of black rhino in North Luangwa is classed as important and designated a Key 2 population, reflecting both the conservation significance and the intensive protection required to maintain it. Each individual rhino is part of a closely monitored system, where sightings, movements, and behavioural patterns are tracked and used to inform protection strategies across the entire RCA. This is particularly important in a landscape where natural dispersal, social pressure, and seasonal conditions can all influence movement beyond protected boundaries.

The RMU works in structured rotations, combining direct observation with telemetry tracking to maintain an up-to-date understanding of the population. The FLU, operating along a 166km electrified fence, provides the physical and operational backbone of the system, ensuring that the integrity of the protected area is checked every day across more than 1,400km² of wilderness.

Supporting Rhino Protection Operations Across North Luangwa National Park

During 2025, this work has continued to be supported through fuel provision and training for RMU and FLU teams, ensuring that patrols, monitoring, and rapid response capacity remain consistent across the landscape. Fuel is key to enabling teams to move through vast and often difficult terrain, whilst additional training strengthens the skills needed to interpret tracks, respond to telemetry signals, and maintain the fenceline that anchors the entire system.

Taken together, this work reflects a conservation system shaped by distance, discipline, and detail. North Luangwa is not an easy landscape to work in, but it is precisely this remoteness that has allowed it to remain one of the most intact wilderness areas in Africa. Protecting its rhinos requires sustained effort across every level of operation, from field patrols to logistical support.

Partnerships Driving Black Rhino Conservation Success

On behalf of Save the Rhino International and the North Luangwa Conservation Programme, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Anna Merz Rhino Trust for its continued and invaluable support. This commitment has directly strengthened frontline conservation work, enabling the RMU and FLU teams to operate effectively across one of Africa’s most challenging landscapes.
