Stephen Grootes speaks to Bronwyn Williams, Trend Translator and Future Finance Specialist at Flux Trends, reviewing the book Out of This World and into the Next by Adriana Marais, which explores humanity’s enduring spirit of exploration, tracing the roots of space travel back to some of the earliest technological advances made by our ancestors in South Africa.

Listen to the interview in the audio player below.

Adriana Marais’ Out of this World and into the Next is more than a science book.

It is an ambitious exploration of where humanity came from, where it is headed and why South Africa has an important place in that story.

Rather than focusing solely on rockets and space missions, Marais begins with humanity’s earliest technological breakthroughs, arguing that discoveries made in the Cradle of Humankind laid the foundations for innovations that eventually made space exploration possible.

It is a compelling way to connect South Africa’s archaeological heritage with one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.

But the book offers more than an account of scientific discovery. It highlights how investment in research, technology and innovation can create long-term economic value.

The global space economy is attracting billions in public and private capital, and Marais makes a strong case that today’s scientific advances will shape tomorrow’s industries.

Reviewing the book on The Money Show with Stephen Grootes, Bronwyn Williams, Trend Translator and Future Finance Specialist at Flux Trends, says the book explores humanity’s enduring spirit of exploration, tracing the roots of space travel back to some of the earliest technological advances made by our ancestors in South Africa.

“It’s kind of the South African take on Stephen Hawkins, ‘A Brief History of Time’. It’s a book that goes through from the origins of life all the way through to perhaps where we’re heading next, into the space age.”

“Adrianna’sstoryisreallywrappedupinboth, lookingatboththeeconomicsandmoneyandscarcityandeverythingelse…So the economics that this brings up are really interesting, complicated, and she does a pretty good job of unpacking really complicated ideas.”

    – Bronwyn Williams, Trend Translator and Future Finance Specialist – Flux Trends

“She’s trying to really explain quantum cryptography, quantum mechanics for the rest of us… she does a very good job of breaking it down into bite sized chunks for the most of us. She’s had an amazing life like intersecting with celebrities, access to academia, access to funding, access to incredible sort of startup projects, and putting Africa quite literally on the space map with the sort of piggybacking of China’s latest mission to the far side the moon is a really big accomplishment for Africa.”
