The Nigerian lifter laid the foundation for victory in the snatch, where she lifted an outstanding 103kg to establish a commanding nine-kilogram advantage over Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau, who managed 94kg.
With the gold medal within touching distance, Lawal returned for the clean and jerk and showed exactly why she is one of the continent’s finest lifters, successfully hoisting 126kg to finish with a combined total of 229kg, setting a new Commonwealth Games Record and leaving the rest of the field trailing behind.

The weightlifting success story began with Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who battled from third place after the snatch to win silver in the women’s 48kg event. Edidiong Joseph Umoafia followed with a dominant gold medal in the men’s 71kg, lifting 319kg to set a new Commonwealth Games record, before Onome Omolola Didih rewrote the record books in the women’s 53kg with a 206kg Commonwealth Games record to secure another gold.
Although Favour Agboro narrowly missed the podium after finishing fourth in the men’s 65kg, his courageous performance further demonstrated the depth of Nigeria’s weightlifting team.
Lawal’s latest heroics now mean Nigeria has won three gold medals and one silver medal in weightlifting, adding to the country’s remarkable haul in para powerlifting, where Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris struck gold, while Esther Oyema, Roland Ezuruike and Rita Ferdinand claimed silver medals.
