Britain Unites With France and Germany to Fuel Spain Tourism Rise as Millions of Travellers Choose Europe’s Safe Holiday Powerhouse in 2026

Britain, France and Germany are driving Spain’s tourism rise as millions of travellers choose the country for safety, higher-quality holidays, rising spending and premium experiences in 2026.

Spain’s tourism sector recorded strong financial growth in the second quarter of 2026, supported by rising international arrivals, increased visitor spending and the country’s image as a safe and attractive destination amid continued geopolitical uncertainty. Tourism industry group Exceltur reported that Spain benefited from changing global travel patterns as tensions in the Middle East encouraged some travellers to redirect their holidays towards destinations perceived as more stable.

Tourism-related gross domestic product (GDP) in Spain is expected to increase by 2.7% across the full year of 2026, following a 3.4% growth rate recorded during the second quarter. The expansion was driven by higher foreign visitor numbers, stronger domestic travel demand and a noticeable increase in spending per traveller.

Spain continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s most influential tourism markets. As the second-largest tourism destination globally by visitor numbers after France, the country welcomed a record 96.8 million foreign visitors last year, highlighting its continued appeal among international travellers.

Spain Tourism Growth Accelerates as Foreign Arrivals and Spending Increase

The second quarter of 2026 delivered further evidence of resilience within Spain’s tourism economy, with international travel demand continuing to expand despite challenges linked to global uncertainty. The increase in tourism-related GDP reflected both higher visitor volumes and stronger economic contributions from travellers.

Foreign tourist spending increased by 8.2% in the second quarter compared with the same period last year, showing that visitors were not only arriving in greater numbers but were also spending more during their stays. This rise supported hotels, restaurants, transport providers, attractions and other businesses connected to the tourism ecosystem.

Domestic tourism also contributed significantly to the sector’s performance. Spending by Spanish residents on domestic travel increased by 8.3% during the same period, demonstrating continued confidence among local travellers and reinforcing the importance of Spain’s internal tourism market.

The combination of international and domestic demand created a balanced recovery environment for tourism businesses. While foreign visitors remain a criticalional stability for destinations across the country

Exceltur’s projections indicate that Spain’s tourism industry is expected to maintain positive momentum throughout 2026, although external economic and geopolitical factors remain important considerations for future growth.

Middle East Tensions Redirect Global Travel Flows Towards Spain

Spain’s reputation as a secure and reliable holiday destination played a major role in attracting additional international visitors during a period of increased geopolitical uncertainty. According to Exceltur, ongoing tensions in the Middle East contributed to a shift in global tourist flows, with some travellers choosing Spain as an alternative destination.

The country benefited from its combination of political stability, developed tourism infrastructure, extensive air connectivity and diverse holiday experiences. Spain offers a broad range of options, including Mediterranean beach resorts, historic cities, cultural attractions, nature destinations and luxury travel experiences.

The impact of changing travel preferences became more visible as uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict continued. Travellers looking for destinations offering safety alongside quality experiences increasingly considered European destinations, with Spain emerging as one of the major beneficiaries.

Industry forecasts suggest that this trend could continue during 2026 as international travellers remain cautious about destinations affected by geopolitical tensions.

However, the tourism sector also faces potential risks. Rising energy costs connected to international conflicts could increase operating expenses for airlines, hotels and tourism companies, creating pressure on profitability.

Despite these challenges, Spain’s strong tourism foundations are expected to support continued growth throughout the year.

Luxury Accommodation Demand Strengthens Spain’s Premium Tourism Market

The latest tourism figures also highlighted a significant shift towards higher-value travel experiences in Spain. Visitors and domestic travellers increasingly showed greater demand for premium accommodation, contributing to stronger revenues across the hospitality sector.

Exceltur data revealed that overnight stays at four-and five-star hotels increased by 3.6%, reflecting growing demand for upgraded accommodation and higher-quality travel experiences.

The movement towards luxury tourism represents an important development for Spain’s travel industry. Rather than focusing only on increasing visitor numbers, destinations are increasingly targeting higher spending travellers who contribute greater economic value through accommodation, dining, shopping and premium experiences.

Spain’s luxury tourism segment has expanded across several regions, including major cities, coastal destinations and island markets. High-end resorts, boutique hotels and exclusive experiences have become increasingly important components of the country’s tourism strategy.

This premium shift has also helped improve tourism revenue performance. Higher spending per visitor allows the industry to generate stronger economic returns without relying solely on increasing arrival numbers.

The trend aligns with broader global travel patterns, where many travellers are prioritising personalised experiences, wellness, gastronomy, cultural discovery and premium accommodation options.

Spain Tourism Businesses Expect Positive Summer Season in 2026

Tourism companies across Spain are preparing for a strong summer season, with Exceltur forecasting a 3.2% increase in sales for tourism businesses. The outlook reflects continued demand from international markets and strong expectations for domestic travel.

Spain’s summer tourism performance remains closely linked to its traditionalund 45%, arrived from Britain, France and Germany, which continue to represent some of the country’s most important tourism markets

British travellers remain particularly significant for Spain’s tourism economy due to strong historical connections, frequent flight availability and the popularity of Spanish coastal destinations. France and Germany also provide substantial visitor numbers, supporting city tourism, cultural travel and resort demand.

Beyond these established markets, Spain continues to attract visitors from a wider range of international destinations. Improved connectivity, expanding tourism products and strong global recognition are helping the country maintain its competitive position.

However, tourism businesses are monitoring rising operational costs, particularly energy prices, which could affect profitability during the peak travel period. Higher energy expenses may influence transportation, accommodation operations and service costs.

Despite these concerns, industry expectations remain positive, with Spain positioned for another year of significant tourism activity.

Spain Maintains Global Tourism Leadership Through Safety, Quality and Visitor Experience

Spain’s tourism success in 2026 demonstrates the strength of a sector built on safety, infrastructure, diversity and international appeal. The country’s ability to attract visitors during periods of global uncertainty highlights its reputation as a dependable destination.

The combination of rising foreign arrivals, increased visitor spending, stronger domestic tourism and growing demand for premium accommodation has created a favourable environment for continued expansion.

With tourism-related GDP expected to grow by 2.7% in 2026, Spain remains one of the most powerful forces in the global travel industry. The country’s record achievement of welcoming 96.8 million foreign visitors last year provides a strong foundation for future growth.

As travellers continue to prioritise safe destinations, high-quality experiences and memorable holidays, Spain is expected to remain at the centre of international tourism demand. The country’s ability to adapt to changing travel patterns while offering diverse experiences will continue to strengthen its position as a global tourism leader.
