The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, is set to travel to Senegal following the heated fallout from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final
His visit comes weeks after the contentious ruling that awarded the championship to Morocco after Senegal abandoned the match in protest
The CAF Appeals Board had ruled that Senegal forfeited the final by leaving the pitch, granting Morocco a 3-0 victory
The controversial decision has ignited widespread criticism and left tensions high between CAF, Senegal, and Morocco. In response, Senegal has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, though a verdict may take up to a year to finalize
Motsepe’s visit, scheduled for Tuesday in Dakar, aims to ease the mounting tensions and address the public relations challenge that has engulfed African football
Reports indicate that he will hold discussions with Senegal’s president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as well as the head of the Senegalese Football Federation, Abdoulaye Fall
According to local journalist Lassana Camara, these talks are expected to cover ways to restore trust and promote cooperation between CAF and the Senegalese football authorities following one of the governing body’s most controversial rulings
The visit highlights CAF’s urgent need to manage the fallout from the AFCON final, where Senegal’s protest and subsequent disqualification created a storm across the continent
Stakeholders hope Motsepe’s discussions will help prevent further disputes and rebuild confidence in African football administration while ensuring that future tournaments are conducted more smoothly and fairly
Senegalese fans and football officials alike will be watching closely, hoping that this high-profile intervention leads to a resolution that acknowledges the concerns of all parties involved
