Lagos Mainland Local Government has called for collective action to preserve the environment.

It commemorated the 2026 Lagos State Tree Planting Day with a tree-planting activity at Progressive Estate, Desalu, Ebute Metta, under the theme: “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility.”

The event brought together government officials, community leaders, environmental stakeholders, and residents in a united effort to promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and a healthier ecosystem through tree planting.

Vice Chairman of the Council, Adewale Momoh, while encouraging residents to embrace tree planting as a continuous responsibility rather than a once-a-year activity, described tree planting as a practical and sustainable response to climate change, environmental degradation, and poor air quality.

Momoh also delivered the keynote message of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who reaffirmed the State Government’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability.

The governor emphasised that there is hope for a greener Lagos through collective action and urged residents to actively support the tree-planting initiative by planting and nurturing trees in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.

Council Secretary, Rafiu Salam Adekunle, who delivered goodwill message of the chairman, Mayor Jubril Kolawole Emilagba, urged residents to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees, noting that they play a vital role in carbon absorption, biodiversity conservation, erosion control, and flood mitigation.

Representing the Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, officials of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), Mrs. Olaleye Opeoluwa and Miss. Sagi Jayeoba, reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Mrs. Olaleye noted that tree planting remains a strategic intervention against erosion, flooding, and environmental degradation while preserving Lagos State’s environmental heritage for future generations.

A major highlight of the event was the ceremonial planting of trees by government officials, community leaders, environmental stakeholders, and residents, symbolising their collective commitment to building a greener, cleaner, and more resilient Lagos.

The Head of Department, Environmental Sanitation Services, Mrs. Pedro Aramide, reaffirmed Lagos Mainland Local Government’s commitment to working closely with the Lagos State Government and other relevant stakeholders in advancing environmental sustainability.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Chairman of the Community Development Association (CDA), Mr. Abayomi Jubril Desalu, described the initiative as a significant investment in the future of Lagos and encouraged everyone to continue protecting and nurturing the environment.
