South African Ambassador to France, Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa, has died under what President Cyril Ramaphosa described as “tragic circumstances.”
Mthethwa’s body was discovered outside the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile, where he was staying on the 22nd floor.

French media reported that his wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, had alerted authorities after receiving a distressing message, leading to the search. The 58-year-old was later confirmed deceased.
President Ramaphosa Expresses Deep Sorrow
In a statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended condolences to Mthethwa’s wife, family, and loved ones.
“The untimely passing of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa is a moment of deep grief in which government and citizens stand beside the Mthethwa family,” Ramaphosa said.
He praised Mthethwa’s years of service to the nation, highlighting his work in strengthening ties between South Africa and France, which benefited businesses and citizens in both countries. “May his soul rest in peace,” Ramaphosa added.
Tributes From Government and Political Parties
International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola also paid tribute, describing the loss as not only national but felt within the international diplomatic community.

“I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss. It is also felt within the international diplomatic community,” Lamola said.

The Umkhonto weSizwe Party issued a statement honouring Mthethwa’s legacy in public service, recalling his roles as Minister of Police, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, and most recently, Ambassador to France.
