The DA has laid a complaint against the City of Ekurhuleni over what it describes as a housing crisis.

The party approached the South African Human Rights Commission complaining about the current backlog in delivering housing.

According to a response supplied by the housing MMC last year, Ekurhuleni accounts for a housing backlog of 283 235 households.

Last month, the DA submitted a memorandum of demands to the premier’s office calling for urgent provincial intervention.

DA Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Khathutshelo Rasilingwane said that the interventions by the city so far fall short of addressing the backlog.

“Projects such as Hospital View, Esselen Mega Housing Project, Winnie Mandela extension 25, Mackenzieville Extension Two and Vosloorus extension 9 have experienced years of delays, disruptions and periods of stalled construction, leaving many qualifying beneficiaries waiting far longer than they should.”
