Ollie Peake’s reaction said it all.

The Victorian youngster squandered a golden opportunity to convert a tremendous start into his maiden first-class century against Tasmania on Tuesday.

Watch Australia’s Tour of South Africa Live & Exclusive on Fox Cricket, available on Kayo Sports.

Batting in his highest position for Victoria at No. 3, Peake dragged a cut shot back onto his stumps after reaching 50 at Bellerive Oval.

The southpaw had cut stylishly but this particular delivery from Tassie seamer Marcus Bean was a fraction fuller.

He was devastated when the ball cannoned back onto his stumps, making a slow trudge off in pristine Hobart conditions.

Peake arrived at the middle in the sixth over after Campbell Kellaway (three) was caught behind.

He batted brilliantly, hitting nine fours and navigating the delicate period before lunch.

Peake and Marcus Harris (54) shared a 107-run stand but both were back in the pavilion 30 minutes after lunch.

The 20-year-old is building nicely, having also hit 73 in the One Day Cup last week, but he is yet to pound the Test selectors’ door down with a statement century.

Victoria lost 2-0 when Peake and Harris departed, retreating from its commanding position of 1-116 in pursuit of Tasmania’s 10-241.

Ben McDermott made the most of the second-session batting conditions on day one with a fighting century to lift Tasmania from 7-45.

Mitch Owen jumped on the opportunity, taking a career-best 4-58 to help dismiss the Vics for 207.

The game continued to ebb and flow before stumps as the Vics sunk Tassie to 4-14.

McDermott and Jake Doran were, again, left in charge of Tasmania’s rescue mission.

Queensland, meanwhile, was in complete control at drinks of the final session against South Australia.

The Bulls took a first-innings lead of 35 courtesy of Jack Clayton’s tidy half-century (66) and late runs from Mitch Swepson (19) and Cameron Gannon (17).

Clayton was unlucky to be given LBW to South Australian Brendan Doggett (3-46 off 20 overs) despite clearly hitting the ball.

The Bulls then tightened their grip on the game by reducing South Australia to 6-44.

Australian white-ball quick Xavier Bartlett raised his future Test stocks with three of the first four wickets.

Kurtis Patterson was in and out early on day two after his excellent century for NSW, falling to Kieran Elliott for 122.

NSW declared at 6-440 and had Western Australia 2-20 at lunch.
